Palawan Island - Philippines
Palawan Island
If
you are looking for a unique place to spend a vacation, Palawan Islands are the
perfect destination.
In the southern part of the province of Palawan, which
includes all of the Koh Rong islands in this region, there are no tropical
depressions at all. However, in the northern part they will get torrential
rains and typhoon affects from July and August. Most sea vessels consider the
most favorable months for travel to be March through June.
The
average temperature within the area is about 31°C. There is very little
variation from this temperature year round, so visitors can expect a warm and
enjoyable vacation no matter what time of the year you go, as long as you can
handle a bit of rain.
Palawan
is also very historical island. It is believed that man has lived within this
island for over 50,000. Within some of the caves there are bone fragments and
other artifacts that scientists believe date back this long ago. In the 12th
century, immigrants from Malaysia began to settle among the islands.
Calauit Game and Preserve Wildlife Sanctuary
Calauit
Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary is located on Calauit Island at the
northwest tip of Busuanga. The Sanctuary is separated from the mainland by a
wide belt of dense mangrove on the western side of Illutuk Bay. This wildlife
sanctuary is home to a wide range of exotic African animals and many endangered
animals that are native to the area of Palawan.
Access
is possible by vehicle or by foot. Small rivers and creeks abound on the
island, although most of these water sources dry up during hot months. Some
springs provide year-long supply of water in ponds and lagoons.
El Nido Marine Reserve Park
El
Nido Marine Reserve located near the El Nido Resorts is 238 km north of
Puerto Princesa, this is an incredible place to see fish and sea life that are
able to rebound because of the protections that this park offers. Philippine
cockatoos are also finding a second life within this park area.
This
popular nature spot boasts of diverse ecosystems such as rain-forest, mangroves,
white sand beaches, coral reefs, and limestone cliffs. Manta rays are a common
sight and when in season, divers may see one of the world's rarest marine
mammal, the sea cow, known locally as "dugong". The water in and
around the bay are a perfect spot for the hawksbill turtles and serves as their
nesting site.
Coron Reefs, Coron Bay
Coron
area is famous for its World War II wreck diving, and the site has been named
in many lists of top dive spots in the world. In September 1944, a fleet of
Japanese ships hiding in the harbor were sunk in a daring raid by the US navy.
The result is around ten well preserved underwater shipwrecks surrounded with
coral reef.
There
are also attractions on Coron Island itself. There are many beautiful white sand beaches, mostly tiny and surrounded by large limestone cliffs and
wildlife. Barracuda and Kayangan lakes are both stunning locations, and good
for snorkeling, and the island is the ancestral domain of an indigenous tribe
who are managing the island in a sustainable way and keeping outsiders at a
distance and offshore at night.
