Feel the Old Street atmosphere - Tamsui [Danshui], Taiwan
Old Street in 淡水 Tamsui [Danshui], Taiwan
Xiao Chi, Restaurants, Cafe, and Tamsui River
Tamsui is named after the Tamsui River, meaning "fresh water". It was originally home to Formosan indivenous people. Tamsui was settled by the Spanish in 1629 as a town. Later in 1641, Spanish was expelled by the Dutch, who built Fort Anthonio, known as Hongmao Castle. Tamsui continued to grow and became the largest port in Taiwan by 19th century, however the port operation moved to Keelung later on by 20th century. Because Tamsui was close to Taipei City, it has become people's favorite destination to take a stroll and enjoy a cup of coffee along the riverside.
Tamsui is most easily accessed from Taipei by taking MRT Red line. It takes roughly about 40 minutes from Taipei Main Station. If you visit there, you should arrive there before the sunset. Tamsui is a popular location for viewing the sunset that you do not want to miss. Walking along the river would sensitize your romance and new experience with comforts.
Visiting Tamsui for the first time, Iron egg can not be missed. Yes, It is. It is black and looks a little unpleasant. But, once you taste it, you will miss it in the future. Iron eggs are eggs which have been repeatedly stewed in a mix of spices and air dried. It is quite chewy.
The next Xiao Chi mission would be A-gei. A-gei is a Tamsui District's speciality food. It consists of a peice of fried tofu, stuffed with cooked Cellophane noodles, and sealed with surimi. When you recieve A-gei Tofu Fishcake, you bust open the top and mix well with mysterious pinky orangy sauce. It tastes a little sweet and goes really well with glass noodle inside. If you are afraid of this mysterious sauce, then, you can order A-gei fish ball soup, which looks normal compared to Tofu Fishcake.
And so on, enjoy Xiao Chi feast!
In addition to Xiao Chi Street food, tamsui, stunningly, has a lot of good cafe and restaurants along the riverside, where you can enjoy the food and the atmosphere at the same time.
This cafe is called Mommouth. Taiwan is known for its hot weather. While eating Xiao Chi on the street, you probably got sweaty. Looking for air-conditioned cool and comfortable place? Mommouth serves drinks and hot dishes with low price, and of course, cool temperature.
