Ibiza is one of the Balearic
islands, an archipelago of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea. It's well known for
the lively nightlife in Ibiza Town and Sant Antoni, where major European
nightclubs have summer outposts. It’s also home to quiet villages, yoga
retreats and beaches, from Platja d'en Bossa, lined with hotels, bars and
shops, to quieter sandy coves backed by pine-clad hills found all around the coast.
Ibiza is a rock island covering an area of 572.56 square
kilometres (221.07 sq mi), almost 10 times larger than Manhattan in
New York City. Ibiza is the larger of a group of the western Balearic
archipelago called the "Pityuses" or "Pine Islands"
composed of itself and Formentera. The Balearic island chain includes over 50
islands, many of which are uninhabited. The highest point of the island
is Sa Talaiassa, at 475 meters.
1. Ibiza
Dalt Vila
The oldest part of Ibiza town was first settled by the
Phoenicians and is still enclosed by the walls built in the 16th century to
keep Turkish pirates out. Today, the narrow, cobbled streets are flanked by
handsome medieval mansions. The cathedral is at the highest point, near the
castle. Walk around the walls to get a sense of the strategic location.
2. Formentera
You might want to
spend all day on one of the spectacular beaches – where nudism is the norm but
not obligatory – or perhaps walk around the coast. The salt pans are now a
nature reserve and a haven for birdwatchers.
3. Nikki
Beach Ibiza
The extremely hip beach club group opened a venue near
Santa Eulalia in 2013, which immediately became the place to be seen, at
any time of the day. Expect cabanas, daybeds, cocktails, bronzed bodies and a
bucketload of glamour.
4. Amnesia
Legendary club that
lays claim to inventing the Balearic Beat. It may be difficult to believe now,
but the venue was originally a farmouse dating back to the 18th century. Now
two vast spaces are packed with 5,000 people dancing frenetically on summer
nights.
5. Event
from July 17 til September 15: Ibiza Rocks
Years & Years are
performing at the opening party of the summer music festival which usually
features the hottest bands and DJs around. Acts this year include Sigma, The
Libertines, Fatboy Slim and The Courteneers.
