Cool Summer in Alaska

Alaska is a U.S. state located in the northwest extremity of North America. The Canadian administrative divisions of British Columbia and Yukon border the state to the east, its most extreme western part is Attu Island, and it has a maritime border with Russia to the west across the Bering Strait. To the north are the Chukchi and Beaufort seas–the southern parts of the Arctic Ocean. The Pacific Ocean lies to the south and southwest. It is the largest state in the United States by area. In addition, it is the 3rd least populous and the most sparsely populated of the 50 United States; nevertheless, it is by far the most populous territory located mostly north of the 60th parallel in North America, its population (the total estimated at 738,432 by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2015) more than quadrupling the combined populations of Northern Canada and Greenland. Approximately half of Alaska's residents live within the Anchorage metropolitan area. Alaska's economy is dominated by the fishing, natural gas, and oil industries, resources which it has in abundance. Military bases and tourism are also a significant part of the economy.

The United States purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867, for 7.2 million U.S. dollars at approximately two cents per acre ($4.74/km2). The area went through several administrative changes before becoming organized as a territory on May 11, 1912. It was admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.

FISHING IN ALASKA

Alaska offers some of the most spectacular freshwater, saltwater, fly- and even ice fishing in the world. It can be as easy as pulling off the side of the road and casting a line, or you can charter a boat or float plane to whisk you off to a secluded fishing spot where you can reel in one of the more than 627 species that inhabit the Alaskan waters, including a variety of salmon, trout, halibut, arctic char, pike, grayling and Dolly Varden. With over three million lakes, 12,000 rivers and thousands more fish-filled streams, you can see the challenge isn't catching fish, but deciding where and what to catch.

Fishing alone accounts for roughly $652 million in annual spending by visitors, including purchases of licenses, guides and equipment. So it’s no wonder that every region of Alaska offers accommodations that cater to the needs of the angler, ranging from rustic camping to all-inclusive luxury lodges, and everything in between.

BY CAR RV MOTORHOME

Driving in Alaska allows you the freedom to explore the Last Frontier at your own pace. Scenic views of towering mountains and sparkling glaciers and waterways are abundant along Alaska’s highways, as well as up-close encounters with wildlife like sheep, eagles and moose — right from the road. Many popular destinations and visitor attractions in Alaska are primarily accessible by highway, including Denali National Park and Preserve, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and more.

Car and RV rentals are available in most Alaska cities. Services like gas, food, campsites and other lodging are plentiful along main highways. Many of these roadways are recognized for remarkable scenic, historical and cultural qualities by the National Scenic Byways program. Alaska also has two All-American Roads, the highest level of federal recognition available. The first is the Seward Highway, stretching from Anchorage to Seward in Southcentral Alaska. The second is the entire route of the Alaska Marine Highway System, the state ferry system and the only marine route in the National Scenic Byways program. The Alaska Marine Highway allows travelers to bring cars and RVs onboard for easy access to other port communities and regions.

There are a variety of resources for travelers who choose to see Alaska by road. The Milepost, a comprehensive, mile-by-mile guide to Alaska’s highways, includes maps and detailed information on services and attractions along the way. CRUISE & LAND TOURS

Tours of all lengths and formats are available in Alaska, from a weeklong backcountry adventure to a leisurely trip in a motorcoach to experience the Alaska Highway. Rail tours stretch from tidewater in Southcentral Alaska to the heart of the state’s Interior region, visiting state and national parks along the way. Day and multi-day cruises offer a quick glance of Alaska’s coast or the opportunity to immerse yourself in the marine environment.

For those interested in splitting the difference between active adventure and relaxed pampering, Alaska’s adventure companies offer some of the best compromises. After a day of hiking, rafting or kayaking, guides set up camp and prepare dinner while guests sit back and take in the stunning scenery.
